How to Make a Public Speech? - Step One

A couple of weeks ago, my club’s president said that I would qualify for a speech contest only if I completed two levels in a series of projects.

And he even set a deadline – 30 days.

I had to give over half a dozen speeches to make it.

Developing or writing speech, practicing it and going to various clubs to present in front of varied audiences – that’s a lot of work. I was anxious, and somewhat depressed.

I was hungry for success, though.

So, I laid out a plan. With the help of Shashikant Abbigere I was ready to implement.

The first step was to develop these speeches. This fast-paced execution plan/challenge helped me internalize the speech development process.

In this blog post, I’ll share with you the basics of speech development so that you can make your public speeches effective…

Far too many times, people ramble about what they want to say, especially in public speeches and their videos.. I’ve been a culprit myself, on many occasions.

Now, I’ve learnt how to tackle this problem. I’m about share my learnings in this post.

If that interests you, please read along. It’s going to be to-the-point.

Building Blocks of a Good Speech

Before I venture into talking about the building blocks of a good speech, let me give you the purpose…

The main goal of speech development is to make it easy for the audience to understand your ideas.

Remember, every speech is about sharing valuable idea(s).

Alright, here are the basic building blocks of a good speech:

  1. Your speech should have a clear purpose. (more on it later)
  2. Every good speech will have an opening, body and conclusion – this structure is crucial
  3.  Your opening needs to grab the audience’s attention (a powerful start matters… a lot)
  4. Use stories, examples, illustrations, facts and figures to keep the audience engaged throughout
  5. Your speech should lead to a significant conclusion
  6. The whole thing should be glued together and delivered smoothly

These steps should get you going. If you want me to elaborate on these points so that you can learn more please let me know in the comments down below and I’ll share in my next post.

Until then,
Keep speaking. Keep inspiring.
CM
